II. Week Two: Breaking Hearts

Luis’ eyes widen as he felt the arrow connect and the odd encounter with his cell phone. There were no dragons in New York. Not until this one came and now this feeling was telling him that… Luis heard the dragon screech and Luis’ heart twisted. Grabbing the books Luis headed down to investigate. Hopefully, by the time Luis was able to freefall and land he’d be able to find the wounded dragon where it crash landed. Luis’ eyes began to shimmer and his skin began to crack. The one unique part about having a mother who kept secrets and a determined father of slayer’s blood is that he was the predator and the prey. He never showed his grandfather, if his grandfather had known, or his father for the matter, he would have been dead along with his mother before he was born but through fate he had made it and so had she until that fateful day.
Luis had never fully transformed into a dragon. He doubt that he could. All he knew is that with the dragon enhanced blood mixed with the slayers blood he could double his abilities. Running through people was normal, no one in New York cared who you were or what you were as long as you didn’t bother them so he was able to blend in as a kid who happened to be in a hurry.
Finally arriving at Central Park, Luis allowed his slayer blood to sense the dragon and soon arrived to the wounded creature who was struggling to maintain their form. The dragon’s scales shimmered. The dragon’s scales were a dull pink. Stepping towards it, Luis noted that no one else bothered to look, it seemed that being oblivious or not caring sometimes came in handy when it came to situations like this. Gripping the shimmering sword in his hand, Luis stared down at the dragon. His gripped tightened when he found the dragon subtly switch from a dragon to a girl and then back.
Keeping his guard, Luis demolished the sword and knelt down.
“Dragons don’t belong in New York.” He said sternly.
Reverting back to the girl, the now human looked up with dragon eyes. “S-senpai?” it managed.
Luis locked eyes with her, holding back that vomiting feeling. “Niala?”
Her eyes reverted to her human form and then she completely stopped transforming between her dragon self and her human self.
“How did I not know you were a…?” He shook his head. “That’s impossible. There are no dragons in New York.”
Niali gave a small smile. “There were no dragons in New York.” She muttered as she laid on her side. The arrow had gone directly through her heart.
Luis shuddered. “How many of you are there?”
Coughing up blood, Niala began to shiver. Quickly, Luis took her in his arms. He held her as tight as he could without hurting her.
“Of me…?” She said quietly. “Only one.” She looked up with eyes beaming. “But of them?” Her breath became shallow. “There is only you.”
Luis’ eyes converted to his dragon form. He had never felt a surge as strong as this one. His mixed blood began to fight inside him and he could feel the strengths of both of his dragon blood and slayers blood fight to separate within him.
“H-how’d you know?” Luis said, now feeling more sorrow for the dragon side of her and for the human version that he held close.
“You can’t hide your trueself.” She said brushing up against him, her skin was getting colder by the second.
“A dragon slayer who is born a dragon does not belong in either society and must choose.” She again said with a quiet voice. He had to lean in to listen to her.
Struggling, she brought her hand up to touch his face, helping her, he took her hand and let her feel his cheek. She gave a wheezing laugh.
“There can only be one alpha per state, as the dragons agreed some time ago.” She whispered in his ear.
“I came but knew even I would be killed for being with you my dear slayer.”
Luis watched as Niali struggled and let out an excruciating roar. “Your blood can kill a dragon.” She said in her normal tone.
“I am glad that I was to have the honor.” She said, tears in her eyes.
Luis’ eyes looked over her one last time. A wash of regret came over him. Meeting her lips with his, her grip tightened in his hand and he squeezed back. Holding the kiss until her lips went cold, Luis’ opened his eyes in fear.
Her words run in his ears. You cannot hide your trueself.
Dragon’s blood dominating inside him, Luis gave a vibrant roar that broke nearby windows and shook the whole central park. His eyes changed into his dragon form and his body began to slip into his dragon self as he let out the screech. Clamping down inside of him, his slayer blood restrained him and pulled him down to earth. Feeling the rush of both dragon’s blood and slayer’s blood Luis reverted to his human form and felt his head start to spin.
Blood going cold, Luis felt a warm wrap around him, a blurred image had stepped in front of him to examine Nialie. He wanted to roar, to lash out at the figure to her away from her but all he could do was vaguely follow the image. Knee coming into his view, Luis felt himself slip away into the darkness not know whether he was to be dragon or slayer.

Setting Luis in his bed, Luis’ grandfather shook his head. Today Luis had made his first kill and had fainted. The boy was simply not ready. After all, his grandfather told stories of his dragon slayer days but never mentioned that these days did not start until he was passed the age of twenty one. There had to be the way the boy would forget about the tragic event. He had to erase it. It was the only way.
